CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The storm continued to howl into the night, and it didn’t begin to clear until the early hours of the morning. When first light came, one of the suns broke through the heavy clouds and lit up the entrance of the cave in a warm orange glow.

Sloane tensed as she watched Rhyn leave the cave with Allirie, their silhouettes vanishing into the blinding daylight as they stepped outside. She pushed herself up and stared after them as they left. A part of her wanted to follow them to see what they were doing, but she couldn’t stomach the idea. She knew she would look like a fool if she were caught.

Instead, she started to get ready to leave, hoping they would soon be restarting their journey. It didn’t take Sloane long to repack the few items she had in her bag, but her eyes kept flickering to the mouth of the cave as she waited for Rhyn and Allirie to reappear. Almost an hour passed while they were gone, and when they returned together they were both sweating and grinning widely with their swords still gripped in their hands. Sloane’s stomach dipped at the sight. The two of them had clearly been training

Sloane missed training with Rhyn desperately. She knew she was no match for him, so it was understandable that he would enjoy pitting himself against someone as skilled as Allirie. Still, it pained her to see how happy training with Allirie made him.

She tried to keep the hurt from her eyes as she turned her head and stared at the far wall. She was struggling with the emotions twisting within her. She’d never been one to get jealous, but Sloane didn’t have to be a genius to realise it was envy she felt for the woman. It was a dark and horrible feeling that was so out of place with the usual confidence and certainty she felt thrumming through her veins.

She let out a small sigh as she remembered they were leaving today. She didn’t want to feel this way. It was an unnecessary distraction and completely pointless. As helpful as Allirie had been to them, Sloane was relieved to be saying goodbye.

She heard their footsteps behind her, and she took a breath before squaring her shoulders and facing them. ‘Good training?’ she asked, doing her best to give a genuine smile.

They both nodded. ‘Although Rhyn’s been slacking off,’ Allirie said, grinning as she received an elbow to her stomach.

‘I was going easy on you,’ he replied.

She rolled her eyes at him. ‘Of course you were.’

‘Will we be leaving soon?’ Sloane asked, interrupting them. She wasn’t sure if she could bear to witness even another sentence of their teasing.

Rhyn glanced at Allirie who nodded. ‘The storm has passed,’ she said. ‘We should be able to leave now.’

‘We?’ Sloane exclaimed, struggling not to choke on the word. ‘You’re coming too?’

Allirie nodded. ‘Rhyn explained to me what you’re doing, and I know this area of the mountains well. The
